Thus a political campaign speech is not a record of the campaign, it is an instrument of the campaign, and it must be read accordingly. Candidates want to win votes, and what they say is determined less by truth than by what they think certain groups of voters want to hear. Similarly, diplomatic notes are not records of diplomacy, they are part of the diplomacy. It may well be to the advantage of one government to lie when dealing with another government, since the objective is not to leave a record for future historians but to influence how another government will act.

This much publicized controversy came to light in 1957. A rare book dealer, Laurence Witten, had acquired from an Italian book dealer a volume containing the Vinland Map and the Tarter Relation. The map itself was on vellum and showed “Vinilanda,” clearly meaning “Vinlanda”—the Norse name for North America. If genuine, this was the earliest map to display a knowledge of the Norse voyages to the North American coast. The Norse themselves did not make maps; at least there is no known case of a Norse map.

Any historian working on such texts must be very careful to make sure that the edition he uses is the one appropriate to his work. That does not necessarily mean that he must use the first edition. If the historian’s subject cites the Origin of Species on a particular question, the historian should examine the edition his subject cited. The Origin of Species went through many editions during Darwin’s lifetime, and he made substantial changes from one edition to another. Thus what Darwin said depends upon what edition one reads.
