First released in 1934.

About the writer: Graciliano Ramos used to be largely one of crucial Brazilian authors of the 20 th century. He used to be a seminal voice within the literary "regionalism" movement.
As a toddler Ramos lived in lots of towns of Northeastern Brazil, tormented by poverty and serious climatic conditions (droughts). After high-school, Graciliano went to Rio de Janeiro the place he labored as a journalist. In 1915 he traveled to Palmeira dos Indios, kingdom of Alagoas, to stay together with his father and in 1927 he used to be elected mayor.
In 1933 he released his first booklet, Caetés. many years later he used to be jailed via the Getúlio Vargas govt, on a cost that was once by no means made transparent. His studies in reformatory may turn into a special own deposition, Memórias do Cárcere.
Graciliano died in 1953, on the age of 60. His "dry" form of writing and the clash among the identification and the realm are the numerous marks of his works.

Are we such apostles of mercy as to complain if the Martians warred in the same spirit? The Martians seem to have calculated their descent with amazing subtlety舒their mathematical learning is evidently far in excess of ours舒and to have carried out their preparations with a well-nigh perfect unanimity.
