In what follows, I have chosen to group interests under four thematic headings: first, walks as the product of places; second, walks as an ordinary feature of everyday life; third, the reflections of the self-centred walker, and fourth, walkers who are wilful and artful. A critical, synthetic consideration of these four thematic interests comprises the first part of this chapter. The chapter’s second part seeks to mobilise some key contentions from such ‘new walking studies’ by considering the part they play in the situated and specific context of walkers’ experiences of passage in hills and mountains.

Shearman 1888, 87) This incident illustrated the need for territorialisation – the separation of runners’ space from that of animals and spectators.

A walk becomes a short-lived but highly-prized reward for the longer grind and routine of work. Walking is understood to produce intense feelings of liberation or refreshment, a stronger connection with what is elemental, and a slowing in the otherwise hectic pace of life (Lorimer and Lund 2008). This re-charging can be a necessary reminder that one’s body still pulses during effort, and is capable of demanding physical exertion. The lingering afterglow, and embodied ache, felt on having come home (and ‘put your feet up’) is one of the motivations for having gone out for a walk in the first place.
