Toward an integrative concept of graphicacy In the previous sections, we provide an argument for reconsidering graphs as texts and sign complexes, and reading graphs as an aspect of reading inscriptions more generally. The approach highlights the mutually constitutive nature of signs and referents, that is, of knowledge and the world of experience.

Furthermore, the processes are interconnected so that the structuring of a graph is influenced by the reader’s familiarity with biological situations and vice versa. Toward a developmental phenomenology of reading Reading requires work in order to (a) interpret a text by means of a complex inferential process; (b) check whether or not an expression refers to the actual properties of the things the text is speaking of; and (c) interpret expressions on the basis of certain coded or un-coded circumstances.
