In 1887 he started his teaching career as a lecturer in the Faculty of Sciences of Lille University, where he taught thermodynamics, elasticity, and acoustics. During his 6 years in Lille he published almost 50 papers and 6 books including Leçons sur l’électricité et magnétisme (three volumes). In 1888, he completed his doctoral dissertation on the study of the theory of magnetism. This was his second doctoral thesis, the first one in physical chemistry having been turned down by the influential Marcellin Berthelot.
