I headed for the campus and asked a strolling young gentleman where the Geography Department might be. He heard me first time: his hair wasn’t screening his ears and he looked the sort of kid who’d have washed them, maybe even that morning. It made a change. He told me politely. I suppose I hadn’t been taking much notice of the time, or I’d have realized that academic effort would have ceased in order to give the alimentary tract its chance. The sound of champing jaws wasn’t exactly audible, but it was implicit in the stillness.

Furthermore, arboriculture isn’t my territory. Ahead of me a car pulled away from the kerb and drove away sedately. It was a sedate street. But finally I saw it and turned into the driveway, stopped the car and got out. The gravel crunched under my feet as I walked towards the four steps that led up to the front porch. It was one of those big, old, white-painted, wooden houses with louvred shutters on the windows and plenty of both space and charm. Businessmen’s homes are painted oftener, but I’d settle for one 43 like this.
