Much of the line ran through the Red Clay Valley, bustling in the late 19th Century with farms, small villages and water-powered mills. (Meyer 1898, p 298) The Dixon, Rockford & Kenosha Railway was formed on January 19, 1864, through the merger of the Dixon, Rockford & State Line Railroad and the Kenosha & State Line Railroad.

Heustis, the NP's building contractor for the Grays Harbor line, announced that the NP would bypass the existing towns of Grays Harbor to create a new town, which would serve as the line's terminus. The Atlantic Coast was connected with the Great Lakes in 1850, with Chicago in 1853, and with the western side of the Mississippi in 1856. The maps were created from 1917 Interstate Commerce Commission Railroad Valuation Records, and were updated to approximately 1977.

A connection was established at the eastern end of the line in Alexandria with the Richmond & Danville RR (successor to the O&A RR) which in turn leased the line in 1886. The road heretofore spoken of as the North Shore Railroad, extending from Main street, in the village of Flushing, was thus severed from any legal connection with any corporation; but in fact was an outlying branch, which was subsequently acquired, as will be now explained. With my interest in the Copper Range I am also involved with the restoration of Champion #4, the oldest shaft-rockhouse in the Keweenaw.

This also made connections north into Canada. Tubman, after escaping slavery, lead, on 15 trips to the South, hundreds of Blacks to freedom, via The Underground Railroad, in the North and Canada. Water was picked up on the fly from track pans situated at strategic locations along the whole route. Rather, it was a network of escape routes that originated in the southern slave states in the period of American history that led up to the Civil War. The streetcars allowed people to live away from the city and brought them back to earn a living, buy food and clothing and take them to school, to church and to connect them with the rest of the country.
