It's just a neat way of writing a complicated electric field in which the x component and the y component are out of phase, and that you have a wave at the same time propagating in the z direction. This argument easily generalizes to any number of particles inside and outside the system. In two dimensions, we can consider the force on a patch of membrane held under tension (as in a drum), and the wave variable is the displacement of the membrane from equilibrium. For example, one might make a literal interpretation of Jesus’s statement that we could move mountains with prayer if we just had the faith, or the statement that all we need do is knock, and the door will be opened to us.

This is why the wave-particle reality does not collapse when God is watching as an observer because omnipresence defeats the illusion of time from the observer or observed perception. Wave-particle duality has mystified physicists since the early-1800s, at least. This inspired Schrodinger to adopt the time-honored tradition in physics of divide and conquer: Rather than trying, through one leap, to incorporate all we know about the physical universe in developing a new theory, it is often far more profitable to take many small steps that sequentially include the newest discoveries from the forefront of research.
