Heustis, the NP's building contractor for the Grays Harbor line, announced that the NP would bypass the existing towns of Grays Harbor to create a new town, which would serve as the line's terminus. The Atlantic Coast was connected with the Great Lakes in 1850, with Chicago in 1853, and with the western side of the Mississippi in 1856. A connection was established at the eastern end of the line in Alexandria with the Richmond & Danville RR (successor to the O&A RR) which in turn leased the line in 1886.
